The 1786 Cox Muster and Authorizing Documents for Crown Grants and related Settlement in Quebec

This is a previously little-known muster taken in 1786. Residents of Cox (New Carlisle) and other British settlements in Quebec had to take oaths of allegiance in order to obtain land grants from the King. This muster of some Cox-area lot-holders contains much of genealogical significance. Moreover, a comparison of this muster with the 1784 lot drawing muster as well as the 1784 Embarkation List and 1785 muster on Raymond Garrett's pages may also reveal important items, e.g. occupations, new children, marriages, lots owned and the like.
Immediately preceding this muster on the microfilm from the National Archives of Canada is a series of remarkable documents. They are the authorizing documents from King George to Frederick Haldimand, the Governor of Quebec, to establish British settlements in Quebec by the granting of land to British subjects who met certain criteria and were willing to take specified oaths of allegiance. These documents not only spell out the oaths of allegiance, but also clearly and concisely the criteria to be met by British subjects who desire the land grants. These criteria and catagories bear on the issue of whether or not these British settlements are strictly Loyalist settlements. It is abundantly clear from the documents that being a Loyalist is only one category of persons who can qualify for land grants. Another category includes disbanded or reduced British regulars, like Samuel Chatterton, Richard Billingsley, and perhaps Robert Flowers and others. This document merits further study. The documents and muster are from the National Archives of Canada, RG 4, A-1, Vol.29, pp. 9408-9423, Reel C-3001. A transcription of the muster follows on this page and the authorizing documents on another. © Copyright 2003 William J. Flowers. All rights reserved. |
